Single Treble Hook
Matte Rat
Whether it’s a pitch-black moonless night or a blue bird day, the Matte Rat will ring the dinner bell with its lifelike S-shape waking action. Purposefully placed Tungsten ballast weights ensure both long, effortless casting and accurate waking. In addition to stainless hardware used, a center-pin tail connection offers a solid, durable anchor for any soft plastic worm to be used or replaced. All Matte Rats are hand-shaped, hardened and sealed to ensure durability, while each is individually hand-painted making every one unique in appearance. The Matte Rat gets its name from the highest quality matte finish Epoxy that is used to protect the piece from extremely sharp 1/0 EWG hooks and ensure long-term use. Weighing in at 1.3 ounces, the Matte Rat doesn’t require a heavy swimbait specific rod, giving even an entry level swimbait enthusiast the confidence and opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime.

"Brian Schmidt is one of the most wonderfully creative guys I've ever known. Whether it's hand carving a rat bait or designing fly patterns that bridge the gap between Flyfishing and the conventional world, Brian's work never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think I've seen everything, Brian will send me a shot of his latest creation that sets the bar even higher. I'm never easily impressed, but Brian manages to surprise me every time."

"Brian is both innovative and creative as a great designer. While he understands fishing, he’s one of the few in the industry that thinks outside the box. He has already made a big impact on the fishing industry, and i’m sure it’s just the beginning."

"At this present time, given the very competitive environment within the custom bait market - It's difficult to believe that there are still designers that are consistently evolving, creating innovative baits. Brian Schmidt is one of these rare individuals - from concept to design, and finally hands-on craftsmanship - Brian not only understands aesthetics, but also the practical science behind what makes fish react."
Capt. R. Andrew Cummings
Tackle Industry Consultant/Guide
"Brian Schmidt is one of the most innovative and visionary anglers I know. Put it this way: In a blind test, if you put 100 new products in a room and let me tinker around with them… then ask me to choose my top five favorites... odds are that Schmidty's fingerprints would be on three or four of them (and those would be the only three or four he'd worked on). This is a thinking person's sport. It's all about puzzle solving. Brian is a puzzle master."

The Schmidterbait is a traditional style Spinnerbait featuring a single or double blade option. Designed to be as light as possible for the average fly rod, (suitable for Finesse fishing as well) while tracking correctly at any speed and accurately dropping on the pause. The stainless frame was designed by Brian and is manufactured by The Worth Company, along with all the hardware. Marabou and UV synthetics add movement through the body and surround the wide-gap hook, either size allowing for a trailer hook to be added. Magnum size uses tungsten weight in the cone-head.

"You won’t want to miss out on fishing this fly with a fly rod. You’ll simply catch a bunch of fish. Strip quick to get the blades moving to attract predators or let it drop to create a flutter effect. Flat out fish catching machine!"

The Schmidterbug was designed to be a fly rod version of the classic top water lure, the Jitterbug. The hand-shaped foam head is weighted, built around, and designed to hold the wide gap Tiemco 8089 inverted, completing the weedless design. The marabou body and ostrich tail flow freely at pause and gives a large profile when being retrieved. An Epoxy hardened foam face allows for easy walk the dog action and the proper sound and wobble expected in and around cover.
Recommend rod weight: 6 or larger
Recommended line: floating with nylon leader.
"Brian Schmidt's Schmidterbug is an awesome top water bass fly. This fly pattern is the fly rod version of the classic and super effective Jitterbug lure. The slow, alluring wobble of the head really makes the legs and marabou tail swim - ideal for attracting largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and pike. The hook on the Schmidterbug rides up, fantastic for fishing in and around weeds. One tip with the Schmidterbug is, you need to strip it very slowly. If you strip the fly to fast it will not swim properly. Super cool bass fly!"
